The Eye of Life and Death

The Story, the Idea, and the Process

I wanted to make something elegantly disturbing. And whats more disturbingly pretty than an eyeball vase and flower all in one? The idea started with me not having something for critique and last minute I drew these sketches of human mutated plants. I didn’t really know why I drew them but this one was my first.

The Sketch

Out of all the flowers I made I felt like the most unique was the one with the iris in the center. The pedals weren’t like any other normal flower and not to mention they are tear ducts with tears as the pedals. Imagine a flower always in a state of crying. Knowing that our eyes are very sensitive parts of the body and its the most exposed part of the flower makes you question how does it live or where does it live?

The Progress

Before the resin

When I got to this point I couldn’t believe it. It took months and I prioritized this to be my one and only finished masterpiece of my Sophomore year of college.

It’s finally done!

This was my first time ever using epoxy resin. It was definitely hard considering it would drip and I had to cure it all around with UV light.

The Story

I feel like this plant would exist after some disaster in the world causing plants to take back the world from humans. Like humans did to them, they took human features and used them to their advantage. Evolving them into something unimaginable and making them capable of so much more. For this species, I imagined the tears being either acid or a healing substance. It’s up to the plant to decide whether someone is worthy of its help. As of the anatomy of the plant and environment its more of a mystery to me. So I will leave it to the viewers imagination.
